The News Scheme introduced in April 2008 issued changes to the Deferred Members Scheme with the changes in the benefits received from 1/80 to 1/60 x Final Pay.

Your personal deferred benefit package is received every year in line with an index specified by the Government and gives you:

• a secure pension, paid throughout your retirement;
• an automatic one-off tax free cash lump sum, paid when you retire; and
• life cover and cover for your family.

Deferred benefits are worked out like this:

You can choose to voluntarily take your deferred benefits early.

• From age 60: this is your right – you don’t need your previous employer’s permission.
• From age 55 to 59: this is only possible if you have your previous employer’s permission – you can ask them what their policy on this is.

Please Note - the earliest retirement date changed from 50 to 55 on 1st April 2010
