Calling for action on climate change at COP28

The UN Climate Change conference COP28 is in its final stages. The Committee Chair and Vice-Chair are proud to join 800+ leaders who are standing with COP28 President Al Jaber to ensure he and other world leaders understand the need to prioritise actions that allow us to meet our 1.5 degree goals.

Because #LaterIsTooLate

Councillor Paul Crossley, Chair of the Avon Pension Fund Committee and Councillor Shaun Stephenson-McGall, Committee Vice-Chair and Chair of the Investment Panel, are signatories to a letter calling for action on the global stocktake.

The global stocktake is like an inventory. It looks at everything related to where the world stands on climate action and support. This includes identifying gaps and working together to agree on a pathway to a solution.

The letter asks for:

  • An orderly phase out of all fossil fuels in a just and equitable way, in line with a 1.5c trajectory. While ensuring the tripling of global renewable energy capacity by 2030 from 2022 levels, and the doubling of energy efficiency.
  • The enabling environment to scale up and shift public and private finance, with developed countries taking the lead in action and support. Putting a price on carbon and tripling investment in renewable energy.
  • The halt and reversal of deforestation and land degradation as well as biodiversity and other ecosystem loss by 2030; ensure resilient food systems and deliver a strong global goal on adaptation.
