Employers have a responsibility to enroll employees into a pension scheme if they:
- are aged between 22 and State Pension Age
- they earn over the personal income tax threshold
- they are not already in a qualifying pension scheme
- work in the UK
This is called ‘automatic enrolment’ and is designed to make it easier for people to start saving and have more to live on in later life than just the State Pension.
Large employers are enrolling their workers first, with smaller employers following suit.
Each employer in the Avon Pension Fund will have their own date for when they need to comply with the new rules.
Please contact your employer if you would like to know more.
What if I’m already a member of the LGPS?
There will be no change to your current arrangements and your LGPS membership will continue.
What if I don’t want to join a pension scheme?
You can opt out of the LGPS at any time. There’s more information on our Opting out section.
What if I want to join the LGPS before my employer has to automatically enrolled me?
If your employer is part of the LGPS you will normally be able to join before you are automatically enrolled. Please visit our Thinking of joining section to check whether you are eligible and find out how to join.
